Summary Info
(If you want details, link to Area Profiles.)
Oak Island is two beach communities: Oak Island and Caswell Beach.
The ten miles of Atlantic Ocean beach faces south and therefore
affords a gentler surf along with stunning sunrises and sunsets.
The other side of the island faces the protected waters of the
Intra Coastal Waterway. To the east southeast of Oak Island is
Bald Head Island and Cape Fear.
In
1999 the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach merged to create
the Town of Oak Island. The area is known as a family oriented
beach.
Oak
Island affords more than 60 public beach accesses, a marina and
three piers. There are two educational centers, two public boat
and canoe launch ramps and walking trails and sidewalks.

Oak Island has parks that provide fields and courts for baseball,
basketball and tennis-- or just lazing about in the sun and watching
the comings and goings on the ICW. Then there's the scenic walkway
that crosses Davis Creek and which offers views of the area wildlife
and vegetation.
Growth
on the island compelled the Town of Oak Island to bring the commercial
district on the mainland-- an area on the approach to the Oak
Island Bridge-- to within the city limits. There's a thriving
commercial district with a variety of retail stores, restaurants,
medical facilities and doctors' offices. The community has churches,
the Brunswick County Airport and the Oak Island branch library.
