Oriental, a quaint fishing village with a population of 900, is also known as "the sailing capital of North Carolina." The social life is active here-- there always seems to be a gathering somewhere. Oriental has a flourishing community of artists and writers and the Pelican Players stage plays in season.

The town lies at the mouth of the Neuse River. Eight creeks empty into the Neuse around Oriental, and therein lies its magic-- the area is a year-round boating, golf and fisherman's paradise where prime waterfront property abounds.

Our creeks are wide as rivers in other states. The Neuse River at Oriental is FIVE miles wide and continues on to form Pamlico Sound. These waters are protected on the south by Carteret County and, eastward, by The Outer Banks-- and are a wonderful
  
sailing area. The Intercontinental Waterway passes outside the Oriental harbor breakwater. There are about 1,200 sailboats lying in our creeks and along the Neuse.

The climate is agreeable. Yet you may experience the seasons here. This area is preferred by many who move here From Florida to escape the blast furnace of that state's long summers. And compared to the northern US, you can enjoy a bonus month or two of mild weather each spring and fall. The average annual temperature is 62.6 degrees. The January average is 45 degrees; in June the average temperature is 79.6 degrees. It may snow a couple of times each winter but it's often melted away by that afternoon!

Oriental residents came here from all over the world. You'll meet the most fascinating people. And the quality of life here is one of the best kept secrets in the southeastern US.
